Principles of Flight - Thrust (2)

Jet engines are also called gas turbines.
The working principle is similar as a piston engine except that all 4 strokes (intake, compression, power, exhaust) take place at the same time. Below are some major components of a jet engine.

Here are 3 main types of jet engines :

TURBOPROPS
Turboprop engine is usually used in small airliners and transport aircraft. The propeller and turbine are connected along the same shaft. When the turbine is turned by hot gases, it turns the shaft and drives the propeller. Hence, thrust is produced.

TURBOFANS

Turbofan engine is used in most of the airliners today. Air is drawn into the engine by the fan. Most of the air bypass the combustion chamber and flow around the outside of the engine and eject at the back. It makes the engine quieter and give more thrust at low speed. It also reduce the fuel consumption while increasing thrust.

TURBOJETS

Turbojet engine is usually found in fighter jet. All air drawn in pass through the compressor, combustion chamber and turbine. It is able to produce great amount of thrust. However, the fuel consumption is high and the engine is very noisy.
